It's called 'Honeysuckle' and I think I'm completely in love.

Being the somewhat girly gal that I am. . . I love a good pink, in any hue. . . this Honeysuckle shade that they are now broadcasting around the globe as 2011's color is simply fabulous!

Daily Inspiration: Caught Smiling. . . .

Today I caught myself smiling. . . in the middle of the day. . . swamped with papers, files, emails - buried in work and personal life. . . and I caught myself smiling.

Yesterday, Ben and I celebrated our third anniversary and today we celebrated our third year as a married couple. Time sure does fly. As much as I love the memories of our nearly perfect wedding day, I cherish the walk out of the church and the days that followed, even more. {Hence, the picture above.} I married a guy who loves me for who I am, values my somewhat quirky sense, my need to always strive for more, my experimental cooking, outrageous need to travel, shop and move 1,000 miles per minute . . .
and still always challenges me to be the best side of me. . . a good friend, strong woman, determined employee and mostly a loving wife.

That, my friends, is why I caught myself smiling.
.
I am blessed. I love you babe and I'm so glad to have you in my daily life!

I've been missing my sweet blog, so TODAY, yes TODAY, I decided to check it out again! I've been spending a ton of time working, traveling, spending time with familiy, working on new house updates, developing plans for a new backyard oasis and loving life more than ever! So TODAY is the day that I come back to blog for a quick minute, to share a few fun updates wiht you all . . .

It's officially spring here in our great state, sunshine, trees budding, tulips popping, storms and all. But most importantly it means its time to start channeling the daily sunshine. . .this means new recipes, brighter colors in the house and inviting friends over more . . . all of my favorite things! So here's a glimpse into what we've been working on lately in the nicol household. . .
.
Currently we're channeling a new guest bedroom. . .what do you think of this fantastic new Amy Butler wallpaper? . I'm sort of in love, but I made the mistake of buying my bedding first and now I'm really trying to match paper to bedding. . . ridiculous, I know. . . but its the truth! So the sample is on its way and we'll know soon if its a match made in heaven or not!

We're also in the beginning stages of working with landscape artists from Gardens of Growth to begin designing our backyard oasis, complete with a secret garden seating area, a new blue stone patio and some fantastic plants! Don't you just love this bluestone patio look? More pics to come as it progresses, I promise. . .

Lastly, we've been cooking a ton and we're ready for spring and summer cooking! Is it CSA time yet - it must be coming soon - we've signed up for Seldom Seen Farms again and we simply can't wait to get our box of fresh, organic veggies soon!

Gray Paint, White Trim, a Fab Painter and a Little Love. . .

It's official. . . I'm a slacker, when it comes to my blog - sorry friends, but work, family, travel and entertaining have called. . . But I have a few things I've been dying to post. . .

Our bedroom is finally finished friends. . .what do you think?!?

Our favorite painter (should you ever need one in Indianapolis - check Tony out!) from Tony, from Thatcher Painting, did a FABULOUS job updating our bedroom with its new beautiful gray hue. . . and I'm in love.

The trim turned out AMAZING - thank you to my sweet hubby for all the man hours he put in measuring, cutting and nailing this stuff up - but my goodness - its lovely isn't it!

(sorry the bedding looks wrinkly in this picture - not sure why - it really isn't in real life?!?)

The lamps in the room were picked up at the pottery barn outlet (in Cincinnati, who knew, right?) and at the restoration hardware outlet

Since everything was so straight and blocky looking - I thought we needed a fun, rounded, girly mirror - What do you think? It's from Ballard Designs. . . and so are the candle sticks on the dresser. . . .This fun bubble glass lamp is from restoration hardware. . .

The best part of the bedroom is its something we did together - I love it! P.S. I tried a new feature on my camera to take these pics - I promise not to use it for everything, but I think it sort of creates ambiance - right?!? Maybe not. But whatever - no time to retake pics today!

Still on the hunt for a fun rug and maybe even a neat little chair to go on the right side of the bed in a little area that is open. . . any ideas?!?

Favorite Recipes: Grilled Dinner! Marinated Chicken, Grilled Beets with Feta, Grilled Zucchini and Grilled Pineapple with Honey

A couple days ago, we made one of the most delicious dinners we have in a long time - so I was dying to share these recipes with you all! This is the perfect fall Sunday dinner, for sure.

Grilled Marinated Chicken Breasts with Grilled Beets, Zucchini and Pineapple with Honey

.

Grilled Marinated Chicken Breasts
Ingredients:
-4 Chicken Breasts
-3/4 cup Italian Dressing
-Orange Zest (as desired)
-1/4 cup Olive Oil
-1/4 cup Dry White Wine
-Splash of Balsamic Vinegar (to taste)

Directions:
In a gallon size ziploc bag mix the italian dressing, orange zest, olive oil, white wine and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Place small fork marks in each chicken breast, so marinade will soak into chicken. Place chicken breasts in ziploc bag with marinade. Allow chicken to marinade as long as possible - anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours.

Grill chicken on indirect heat (I know - can you believe I even know what this means!) and grill until meat is tender and ready to serve!
.

Grilled Zucchini:
Ingredients:
- Zucchini- Lemon Juice-Olive Oil
-Lemon Pepper Seasoning
-Parmesan Cheese (Optional)
.
Directions:
Cut up zucchini into small pieces - either quarter size or in strips. Mix zucchini pieces with lemon juice, olive oil, and lemon pepper seasoning (to taste). Once all zucchini is coated in mixture, place in grill basket and grill until desired tenderness. Serve on plate and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.

Grilled Beets with Feta Cheese. (Follow instructions from prior post to grill beets)
.

Grilled Pineapple with honey, lemon juice glaze:
Ingredients:
- 1 can of Pineapple Rings (or Fresh )
-1/4 cup honey
-3 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
- 3 Tablespoons of Butter
.

Directions:
Melt butter and then mix with honey and lemon juice. Place pineapple ring in honey, lemon mixture and then place each ring on grill. Brush pineapple rings when turning. Serve alone as a dessert or over ice cream.

Literally, I sort of can't believe I made this. . .not only did it taste delicious, but it looks beautiful! (I'm a sucker for pretty meals - I'm not gonna lie!)Your guests will be wowed for sure. . . its not only a beautiful meal, but it tastes delicious and it can all be fresh, if you choose!

Daily Inspiration: Just Can't Get Enough. . . Grill Love!

This summer we bit the bullet and purchased a brand new grill! Originally I could think of nearly 10,000 other things I'd rather spend a large lump sum of money on. . . I wanted to redo a couple more rooms, buy some new dresses and shoes, travel, etc. Shoot, I wanted to do anything but spend a bunch of muu-la on a 'GRILL!'

However, Ben, my sweet husband, had been eyeing a new grill for quite some time, but we wanted to wait until our old, cheapy grill bit the dust. So we purchased this beauty. . .the Weber Genesis E-320. I grew up in a family where grilling was muy importante! My dad is a Weber Grill Master and my mom is pretty handy with the grill as well! This new beauty has all the bells and whistles that my hubby desired and even a few that excited me!
.
Prior to purchasing, I only really cared about the color. We chose this beautiful copper color, because I thought it would look nice outside our brick house - literally people - that is what I cared about at the time!

.
Needless to say, after purchasing this beauty, I've fallen in love. . . maybe even more than my sweet hubby!
.
We grill nearly 75% of our our meals now and we could not be happier!
.
So if you are in the market - we'd highly recommend this beauty. . . she leaves beautiful marks (so your food is PRETTY!), she is large (so you can grill tons of fun things for yourselves or for entertaining!) and she cleans really easily too!
.

Sweet Secret Ingredients For a Perfect Bridal Party!

My sweet sister recently became engaged to a fabulous mate and they are now in the process of planning a wonderful wedding here in Indianapolis! Sarah, the bridey, is a thoughtful, caring and creative person - probably one of the nicest people you'd ever come across, actually. So it is extremely important to her to make every detail very special, unique and most importantly, heartfelt.
.
A few short weeks ago, Sarah and Mike began the process of asking the bridal party. They wanted it to be unique, creative and special. So they 'cooked' up a few ideas and this is what they decided upon. . .
.
Mike presented his men with cigars and said something like. . . "Sarah, said I had to find smoking hot groomsmen to stand by my side on our big day, now I'm not sure about the hot part, but you can definitely be smoking! Will you be a groomsman?" Now, it sounds a bit corny - but you have to know Sarah and Mike - this was absolutely adorable and all of his friends jumped at the opportunity to partake in this fun event! Oh and the cigars. . . they were top notch and a BIG HIT too!
.
As for Sarah, she wanted to send a little something to her lovely bridesmaids. . . . . .Sarah is not only witty on paper, but she's also a mean cook. . .so this is what she chose to do. . .
.

(She had these potholders made from a local friend that we have who is a quilter. Sarah picked out all of the fabrics and then Tisha from Quilt Therapy made them all for her! P.S. They are great potholders and she sells them ridiculously cheap - so check her out!)

Such a neat way to be asked to be a part of something so special. . .I cannot wait to see what else she and Mike will 'Cook' up for their big day!

Bedroom Redo . . . Part 1!

There is nothing like a little home decorating to consume your days and give you a goal! We've got a bunch of little projects currently going on and I'm eager to share a the finished projects with you all soon. . .

But for now, I thought I'd share a little glimpse into the projects. . .and give you a sneak peek at where we're heading!
.
Our biggest project has been our master bedroom redo!

We're having the walls painted in a light gray color, keeping the white trim and then also repainting our bathroom in a slate gray color! We chose a light gray wall color and a slate gray wall color for our master bathroom. I used Sherwin Williams, but had them match the Restoration Hardware paint colors. LOVE. Love. LOVE.
.
But we're not just leaving those plain old walls. . . no way, jose. . . we're spicing them up with some delightful trim in neat rectangular shapes! (Installed by none other - my sweet(and handy!) hubby- ben). Check it out!

We searched high and low for the perfect trim - literally we visited every hardware store and lumber yard here in Indianapolis - it was nuts. We finally found the perfect wood at Menards. But of course they had a limited quantity - so I literally drove to every Menards within 1.5 hours of Indianapolis and bought them all out! No seriously, I did. CRAZY.
.
Ben cut the wood, glued and nailed it up! Amazing. Then we had it painted white, like the trim in the rest of our house! Check out these pictures. . .

A New Cupcakery Has Come To Town!

I originally fell in love with them on a business trip to Nashville . . . so I was thrilled when I saw a new 'Gigi's Cupcakes' pop up in Indianapolis!

With flavors like Grasshopper, Chocolate Salted Carmel, Wedding Cake and my favorite, Red Velvet. . . who can resist?

If you like beautiful cupcakes - Gigi's is your place! Gigi started her cupcakery after beginning her own cleaning business at the age of 15. She owned and ran her own business for over 15 years. It wasn't until she made some cupcakes for one of her clients that her talent as a baker was recognized, and at that point she was encouraged to open her own cupcake bakery in Nashville, TN. Gigi is a true entrepreneur, someone who believes in using her god-given talents and a person who does not want to work for anyone else!

To.Die.For - Grilled Beets with Peaches, Rosemary and Feta

Hello friends! Long time, no speak! I'm back today and here to share a delicious recipe with you all!

In our CSA box this year we've been enjoying a delightful assortment of fresh vegetables every single week (courtesy of Seldom Seen Farms). The great thing about a CSA is that it forces you to try new items and experiment with them a bit. One of the items that I have fallen desperately in love with this season, are the beets. Who would have thought. . . I've always appreciated the bright magenta pigment, but never actually thought I'd enjoy their taste. . . I was wrong folks, dreadfully, wrong.

.
I'm sort of obsessed with beets now. So below, you'll find a delicious recipe for roasted, grilled beets with fresh peach, feta and rosemary. OMG. To. Die. For.

To.Die.For. Beet, Peach, Rosemary & Feta Side Dish Recipe:
Ingredients:
-Bunch of Beets (3- 4 beets for two people, depending on size of beets)

-1 Ripe Peach

-Fresh Rosemary

-Feta Cheese

-Olive Oil

-Sea Salt

-Ground Pepper

-Lemon juice

-Honey

Directions:

Clean the beets, by brushing under cold water. Slice beets, the thinner the better. Lay out aluminum foil, drizzle with olive oil. Place beets on oiled aluminum foil. Lightly drizzle beets on foil with olive oil. Sprinkle with sea salt, rosemary and pepper. Fold aluminum foil packet so that all it is closed into pouch. Place on medium-high heat on hot grill, for 25-30 minutes. Every 10 minutes shuffle around beets in aluminum foil packet, so they do not stick to the bottom of the packet. Beets should be soft when ready to be taken off of grill.

Mix small amount of lemon juice and honey, stir lightly. Dice small peach. Mix lemon juice mixture into diced peach.

Place beets on plate, spoon diced peaches onto beets, sprinkle feta cheese (to your desired liking) over beets and peaches. Serve immediately.

Watch your spouse, significant other, or guests enjoy this delicious and easy dish! (As you can see - I served it with grilled chicken, corn on the cob and a glass of white wine - hello, yumm!)

Bittersweet. . .and Fully Transparent!

Life is good. Actually, life is great. I've been in 8 states in the last month on both business and personal travel - its been hectic, but professionally inspiring to say the least.

Today marks my 230th post on Simple Creative Inspiration and I find myself writing this post to be transparent and honest with all of you, the readers! This blogging experience has been one of inspiration through and through, but today I find myself in a bittersweet spot.
.
I have loved every bit of this blog - its provided me with a great outlet for creativity and sharing the things I love with so many of you. However, at times, lately, I have started to feel like I'm not living up to what I set out to do with this blog, by simply not having the time to post as regularly as I'd like. Believe it or not, I've had some guilt about it. Crazy, I know.
.
I tossed back and forth on the idea of no longer blogging on Simple Creative Inspiration, maybe on inviting guest bloggers to help out from time to time or simply changing this blog to be a post a week, or something of that sort. After much thought, I've decided that since this blog was started in an effort to allow room for creativity in my ever hectic life and share neat and interesting finds with others who might also appreciate them, that I will keep it going. I will likely only blog when I have a free second, but I'm hoping by putting this out in the open, I will be able to feel comfortable with this change and lose the sense of guilt that I've had the last few months!

I'd love for you all to continue to share in the journey, if you are so inclined. . . I promise to continue to share simple, small finds that provide creative inspiration for each of us. . .Thanks for sticking with me!

Flowers in Bloom!

Just had to share - even despite the heat, our crazy lives and all of our travel - we've somehow managed to keep our flowers alive and in bloom!

(a big thanks goes to Ben and to my sweet sissy -because when I'm gone, ben waters them and when we're both gone, sarah waters for us!)

Thank Goodness It's Friday, Friends!

Hi long lost friends - it sure has been awhile hasn't it. Life has been crazy, but a good crazy as of late.

Summer is certainly upon us and life has picked up, more so than ever before. Between work, our upcoming neighborhood home tour, and life itself. . . we've been swamped! Needless to say, I've got some great stuff to share with you all - I just need to find the time to actually share it with you all!

We've made two trips up to Michigan over the last few weekends - check out this lovely shot of the lake! Can't beat it - so inspiring.

If you're in Indy - go check out the Woodruff Place Flea Market this weekend - its generally an antique and interior decorators dream - and its oh - so wonderful! I'm sad we'll be missing it to visit my husbands parents in Philly. Check it out and let me know what you find?!?

Daily Inspiraton: Armani Favorites!

A couple weeks back a girlfriend of mine, Miss Sarah, hosted a Master Class at the Giorgio Armani makeup counter in Saks! She actually won it a week earlier when a few of us were at a Fashion Show! She was so sweet that she invited both my sweet sissy and I and it was loads of fun!

Now, I am far from a 'Master' in anything - but when it comes to makeup, I consider myself to be basically at the bottom of the totem pole, when it comes to makeup knowledge. I'm pretty much a simple girl - so I actually learned a ton from this little 2 hour session!

.
During this class I picked up a few great things that I had to share with you all. . . First the perfect lip gloss - for everyday, work, or spicing it up a bit at night - Check this little gloss out - Armani Lip Shimmer #21 - its PERFECT!

Next check out my new secret weapon - Armani Master Corrector - its an under-eye brightener and it seriously works miracles! For the last two weeks I've had 4 people comment on how well rested I look and ask me if I'm wearing new makeup and then tell me how nice my eyes look! Geesh! If I could have known I'd be showered with compliments - I probably would have bought this a long time ago! HA!

Favorite Recipes: Summer Tortellini Mint Salad

A few months back I visited with some girlfriends in Birmingham and stumbled upon one of the most delightful lunch dishes. So, I tried to remember what was in their delicious dish and I tried to tweak and recreate at home. . .I served this tonight to my adorable husband and he loved every bit of it!

Tortellini Mint Salad

Ingredients:
-Package of Cheese Tortellini
-Fresh Mint Leaves
-Package of Frozen Peas
-Pine Nuts (optional)
-1/2 Stick of Butter
-1/4 cup of Skim Milk
-1 Tablespoon of Pesto
-Pinch of Garlic
-Fresh Yellow or Orange Bell Pepper
-Grated Romano or Parmesan Cheese
-Salt & Pepper to Taste
-Romaine Lettuce

Directions:
Cook and drain package of cheese tortellini, set aside. Cook and drain peas, set aside. In a small saucepan combine butter, milk, pesto and heat through until it is a thin consistency. Add more milk if needed. In a bowl combine cooked pesto, peas, chopped peppers, pine nuts, fresh mint and sauce. Coat all ingredients with sauce mixture. Chill pasta mixture and serve over a bed of chopped romaine lettuce.

We served this with a side of salmon and some fresh asparagus for dinner. This salad is refreshing and a nice twist on an ordinary pasta. I'm sure this would be delightful chilled or served warm.

M.I.A. . .Missing in Action!

Hi friends! I'm so sorry I've been so MIA lately. . . I have truly been Missing In Action! When I arrived home last night I realized that I've been on the road for at least 2-3 days for the last 5 weeks and next week will be no different! The great news is that I am more invigorated and challenged in my current role than ever before and the travel has been both exciting and productive.

Unfortunately, something usually has to go when I travel and often times its the blog!

So to my loyal friends and readers. . . Thank you for your patience and know that I'm coming back with a ton of lovely things to blog about from an Armani makeup class I had the opportunity to attend (and a new favorite gloss and eye cream!), to the lovely Decorators Show House and the event we attended last evening here in Indianapolis, to a few more giveaways that are lined up for the next few weeks!

Daily Inspiration: Dining Room Re-Do - Lighting!!

I've been eager to share some ideas that we've been working on around the house lately. . . so I thought today would be the perfect day!

I finally had the dining room painted in a great, deep, dark navy blue. . . I bought a fabulous martha stewart rug and I'm working on finalizing the fabric choices for my dining room chair recovering process and our wing back reupholster as well. (I know for all of my loyal readers - yes, I'm still working on it, I'm so non-commital, sorry!)

Currently this week we're working on the lighting in the room. . . I'm envisioning something unique and a little different. . . what do you think about multiple chandeliers in a room? Has anyone seen it done? We fell in love with it from a catalog a few months back and now its time to make it happen. . .

A few weeks back my sweet girlfriend from college, Nike, who now resides in Denver, emailed me a link to this fabulous etsy artist. I took a few glances and have been dying to share it ever since!

Elizabeth Hurley is an artist out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Elizabeth states that she has two sides to her love of art; she's always been drawn to illustrations and children's artwork, but her second side has always expressed a love for fine art. Her Etsy designs combine both loves paired with her affinity for sewing. . .I think you'll agree that her work is unmatched and something that would be a great addition to any child's room, office, or any room really!

Daily Inspiration: Working Class a Division of SCAD

This week I stumbled upon a few items this week at Indianapolis Museum of Art, so I took a couple pictures and had plans to share them with you! I researched the items a bit more and found that they were all a part of the same group, Working Class a Division of SCAD.

SCAD stands for Savannah College of Art & Design. Working Class is a venture that devotes itself to creating and promoting works from student, alumni and faculty artists. They create works that marry function with fine art and then they sell them nationwide in local retailers. Check out the artists and their designs on the website, for more information!

Talk about talent - wow! This stuff is amazing - currently it seems they focus on stationary, neat paper and entertaining products, home textiles and a few other home decor pieces as well! All are complete with fabulous designs and fabric choices, I simply love it!

Favorite Recipes: Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

This weekend was the perfect weekend to break out the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker for the season! It was beautiful weather, mid 70's and sunny! My lovely husband had the idea and I think it was a great one!

I decided to try out a new flavor, Mint Chocolate Chip, in honor of my future-brother-in-law's 30th birthday! (Happy Bday, Mike! Today is the official BIG day!) I am so glad I tried this recipe out, because it turned out to be delicious and I'm sure he'll be excited to share some later tonight!

Here it is - in the works - it's always so hard to resist when its this consistency, it'd like having a whole bowl of a delicious milk share! Yumm.

Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream:
.
Ingredients:
-2 cups 2% milk (it called for whole milk, it's probably delightful, but I wanted to save calories!)
-2 cups heavy cream
-6 drops of green food coloring (really to your liking)
-1 cup sugar
-1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
-1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-1/4 cup fresh mint leaves (optional, but so good!)
-2 cups chocolate chips, chocolate shavings, etc (to your liking, mini chips would be perfect!)

Directions:
Mix together milk, cream, sugar, peppermint extract, vanilla, and food coloring in a bowl. Pour into frozen Cuisinart Ice Cream bowl. Turn on machine, let it run for 10 minutes then add the mint leaves and the chocolate. Let machine run and circulate ingredients for another 20 or 30 minutes. Remove from bowl and transfer to freezer safe container (I use Ziploc plastic containers and they work perfectly!) Allow mixture to freeze up in your freezer. Serve with a piece of fresh mint on top of your scoop and you'll wow guests, or add a little extra punch by creating homemade ice cream sandwiches, or simply scoop it out for all to share!

I bet if we polled all of our readers we'd find that many of us have some variation of this lovely color in our living space. . .I know my closests are full of it and I've got three - yes three - rooms with this color serving as either the primary color or the first accent in the room!

Needless to say, I'm obsessed with this color and its close color hues. . .and have been for quite sometime. . .

Blogging Inspiration: Fit For Real Life

I follow a number of blogs on a daily basis. In fact, its my morning routine on travel days to check blogs at about 5:45am after getting off the treadmill, if I'm not traveling I have the luxury of checking my faves a little later in the morning.

One of the blogs I follow is Fit For Real Life, written by a friend of mine, Kate. This blogger is a college mate and sorority sister who resides in the windy city, Chicago. Kate blogs daily about healthy living, lifestyle choices and making a difference in the world!

This week alone she blogged about Achieving Success and how it is not something we accomplish alone, and today she shared a great opportunity to help personally impact the world through running! Daily Inspiration: For the Love of Paper. . .

Who doesn't love receiving cards in the mail? There is nothing more that brightens your day than receiving a card from an old friend, a thank you note, or even a written letter. Unfortunately, in today's world, so many of us find it easier to send an email than sit down and write a card. I find this to be highly unfortunate and something I'm setting out to change in my own little piece of the world!

My mom and sister are great 'card-senders' - they are always so thoughtful and the cards seem to arrive at the perfect time. I, for one, send cards more on a whim or in response as thank you notes - but I have found it hard to stay in the habit of sending cards more often. So, in an effort to get back into the swing of sending cards on a weekly basis to friends and family - I've been on the hunt to grow my 'card stock' (get it - hahaha!) and build up my card library so I find it more fun to send cards on a more regular basis!

Today I stumbled upon a fantastic Chicago based papery, called Paper Parasol Press.

I first found their blog and then quickly realized that they had a fantastic little etsy shop as well! This little papery produces all of its own pieces individually, by hand on one of its vintage letter presses.

Would you believe the letter press machine they use weighs in at a ton - they say "she's a big girl!" They'll gladly create custom orders if it fits in with their vision and style and they create handmade, letter press cards because they believe that 'old fashioned acts of writing, make for the best correspondence.'

Tonight is the Night - Go Blue!

Make sure you cheer on the Butler Bulldogs in the Championship game held here in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium tonight!

This weekend we watched as Butler and Michigan State battled it out in the last seconds of the game! We watched the streets fill with people and we watched our little city exude energy and excitement, as our little team won!

Tonight will be no different - Indy will light up in Blue (literally, the downtown is lit up in blue!) and fans will be all over our great city cheering on the Butler Bulldogs! Butler will take on Duke tonight in the Championship game!

Daily Inspiration: What's on Your To-Do List?

I have literally been traveling for 6 weeks straight - pretty much every week for work and weekend for pleasure as of late! I just found out that I'm going to be working from home for the next few weeks, with a few minor 1 or 2 day trips thrown in throughout! I could not be more happy! I love traveling - but when I work from home it provides me with the opportunity to work on home projects, cook, bake, paint, etc!

.
After having traveled roughly 3 weeks out of every month has left me with a hefty to-do list and one that I can't wait to get a jump on this spring . . .

.
Here are few of my projects that we'll be embarking upon over the next few weeks. . .and obviously, pictures will come on each of these as well!
.
-Paint a few items for the Dining Room accents - I bought some fun iron pieces that need a good coat of white spray paint. (Started this one already!!)
.
-Find and order a new chandelier for the Dining Room. (Got any ideas?)
.
-Choose furniture for the Master Bedroom. (currently channeling 'Arhaus' - if you haven't checked it out - you should!)
.
-Officially choose fabrics for dining room chair covers.
.
-Hang some of our newly acquired pieces of artwork throughout the house.
.
-Try and learn to cook a few items - mainly from Julia Child's Mastering The Art of French Cooking! ( I know, I'm crazy - but Julie and Julia, the book, has inspired me!).
.
-Host my murder mystery party!
.
-Get back in shape :)
.

-Plant my pots for the front and back of the house so they are beautifully in bloom soon!

-Install (or have installed!) the mulch and the new plants for the front and back yards!

and the list could go on and on. . . seriously.

Daily Inspiration: Michael Buble!

For my 30th birthday my lovely sweetheart of a husband planned a surprise trip to Fort Lauderdale to see Michael Buble in concert! I opened my birthday present at my surprise birthday party on my birthday at around 9:00pm. The airline tickets were booked for the following morning at 6am. We flew directly to Fort Lauderdale, we stayed a great hotel, saw Michael Buble in concert, dined on delightful food and got some sun!

It was a fantastic weekend!

I tell you this, because if Michael Buble is coming to a city near you - he is a MUST SEE! I have never before seen an artist that is such an entertainer! His concert was unmatched as he is not only an amazing singer, but he is a great dancer, a comedian and most of all, a real person!

I am hoping we can go see him again when he comes to Indianapolis in June! Visit his tour site and make sure to mark your calendars too!

Daily Inspiration: Today is the Big 3-0. . .

So today marks a big day in my world. . .I am turning the big 3-0! It's sort of funny everyone keeps saying - "this is the big one" or "wow its official - you're 30!". . . they are all correct, I am 30 today and I think, as far as I can tell, I'm ok with it!

I don't feel any different. In fact, if I do feel different, I actually might feel even more empowered today, than ever before.

I feel like I have accomplished all I set out to do in my 20's. . . I married my best friend, I live in a fabulous home, I have a wonderful job that both challenges and inspires me on a daily basis. I've maintained a great friendship base, I've stood steady in my faith, I am closer than ever before with my family, I find time to volunteer (although I could always do more of this), I weigh just about the same as I did in college and the list could go on and on. . . Overall, I've been pleased with my 20's.

I anticipate the 30's will be even better. . . I'll watch my career continue to grow, I'll likely get to see my sweet sissy get married along with a few of my other closest friends, I'll likely become a mommy (at some point - don't rush it friends - we've got a few years still for this one!) I likely sit on a few more volunteer based boards and continue to grow in this community which we now call home. I'll watch my husband continue to grow in his career path, we'll continue to make new 'couple' friends, we'll grow in our church home (once we find one that we really feel is 'home')and hopefully much, much, much more!

Needless to say, I did turn the big 3-0 this morning! Honestly, I can say I am so excited, eager and confidant for this next step in my life! I cannot wait to see what lies ahead as I'm sure it will be a process and one that will teach us a lot about what life truly is for me and for our family!

My only hope is that you feel the same joy that I feel today on your birthday this year! It truly is a step and one that is exciting and energizing!

Daily Inspiration: A Day to Remember. . .

Today was a tough day. . .I received a call early this morning we lost one of our favorite family members last evening.

He was not only the oldest member of my family, but also one of the closest to us. He had a large heart, one that allowed him to love unconditionally, live creatively and consistently stay active with his life. Through it all today I am consistently reminded of why we have faith in a higher power, how family is so important to us and how blessed I truly am to be married to a wonderful and supportive man.

.
We should all be so lucky to have married our best friend, closest confidant and ultimately, strongest supporter. Ed and Valeria Lattimer were constant role models of healthy marriage. They lived happily together and loved deeper than most couples could ever even imagine. They both lived together into their early 90's. They have forever exemplified the picture of healthy marriage to our family. When Valeria passed away nearly 2 years ago, we all wondered how Ed would survive. He did, but with a constant reminder of her, she lived in his heart and head.

.
Today Ed joined his beloved wife. This thought alone makes our loss all the more worth every bit. We know that they are celebrating in heaven tonight - probably dining on steak, two slices of pie and a delightful manhattan - all calorie and diabetes free, of course.
.
Today sure was a tough day and the next week will surely be rough as well. Our goal going forward will be to live our life, like Ed and Valeria did. I thank God that I married my best friend, a man who is my closest confidant, a believer and someone who gives me his heart and shoulder on any given day.

. Thank you for giving me your shoulder today and forever, Ben. Some days I need it more than others. . .

Too bad every time I walk outside to let my sweet Finley play or to grab the mail, I quickly realize how cold it still is outside! Bummer!

This lovely crinkle dupioni dress from Jcrew is a must have as it would be a lovely outfit to either dress up or down! I think I like it better in the charcoal, but its love at first sight for me!

Lastly, I stumbled upon this adorable mini dress while shopping a bit in Mexico. Tory Burch continually impresses me and this dress follows right in line with all of her other amazing pieces! A must have. . . In my opinion!

I've always liked Lilly Pulitzer and the style of her dresses . . . I would say, however, that most of her fabric choices were usually a bit too pastel or bright for me!

Blogger Inspiration: NieNie Dialogues

I take the time each day or every two days to read a few of my favorite blogs. I've decided to start showcasing these with so many of you! It's a great way to brighten your day and also increase the bloggers readership too!

Now most of the blogs I follow on a daily basis are design, fashion or food oriented. I do have a couple that I read for other outside inspiration, The NieNie Dialogues is of of these.

Stephanie Aurora Clark Nielson lived through an almost fatal airplane crash. She writes her blog from Utah where she has four children and a lovely husband. She is happy to be blogging and recovering on a day to day basis. Her blog is both powerful and motivating.

For some daily inspiration check out The NieNie Dialogues. She has started a number of other blogs, one called CuisineNie - a with a great focus on simple and elegant cooking. It chronicles the cooking that happens in her house, provides recipes from other readers and brings the reality that NieNie can't physically cook everyday, depending on how she is doing with her recovery.

NieNie started another blog called Nie & You - a look at mornings from Nie in Utah and a new friend, a graphic designer from Munich, Germany! Check them out - they certainly serve as inspiration. . . and it brings a smile to your face with simple photos, snapshots of life and reality.

Favorite Recipes: Greek Yogurt Chicken

I've been on the hunt lately for some new delicious recipes. I stumbled upon this great Greek Yogurt Chicken recipe that I just had to share!

Ingredients:

-4 Chicken Breasts

-1 cup of Greek Yogurt

-1 teaspoon Oregano

-1 teaspoon Basil

- 1 clove Garlic

-1/2 teaspoon Salt

-1/2 teaspoon Pepper

- Juice of one Lemon

Directions:

Mix Greek Yogurt, Oregano, Basil, Garlic, Salt, Pepper and Juice of Lemon. Clean Chicken Breasts and coat with 1/2 of Greek Yogurt mixture. Marinate in refrigerator for 1-4 hours. Place coated Chicken Breasts into baking dish. Bake Chicken at 375 degrees for 35 minutes. Then turn on broiler and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until lightly browned. Serve Chicken Breasts by placing a dollop of additional Greek Yogurt mixture on each chicken breast.

I served this Chicken with Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans and a Greek Salad. It was a quick alternative to our usual of marinated Chicken Breast, and it was delicious!

Daily Inspiration: Simplicity is Key in the Workplace!

I've been on the hunt for small, simple stud-like earrings. Sure I've got my pearls and my diamonds, and I own a ton of neat chandelier earrings - but I need some more simple stud earrings that I can wear to work or on weekends for a simple alternative! I work in a fairly conservative environment, so I always watch the jewelry I choose to wear Monday - Friday!

So where did I turn. . . to Etsy of course! I stumbled upon a great and inspirational jewelry designer out of New York. My favorite part about Etsy art is reading the profile of the designers! Michelle Chang has such an amazing story. Michelle has worked as a fine artist, and interior designer, and an illustrator. She has a BS from Cornell and a BFA from SF Academy of the Arts. She has lived in NY, Korea, Denmark, Japan, San Francisco, and she has now most recently moved back to where she calls home, in New York. Check out her fabulous designs on Etsy, they are all handmade and each is equally as unique as the other.

Daily Inspiration: Missing, but in ACTION!

I'm so sorry I've been so MIA . . . Life has been hectic and crazy to say the very least! I'm eager to share some of the things I've been working on, but some are surprises and some are ideas I'll share soon!

Over the last few weeks I've been in South Bend, Chicago, Mexico, Oklahoma City and I'm heading to Maryland at the end of the week, and then another trip to Mexico is looming on the horizon after that blustery trip!
.
A few weeks back I had the opportunity to partake in an excellent volunteer opportunity here in Indianapolis. I volunteered to serve as a 'small group facilitator' with a fraternities national organization, in a program called 'Recruitment Bootcamp,' which was lead by Campuspeak.
.
This was an interesting opportunity as I worked with all men. I'm a good old sorority girl, so that alone posed an interesting alternative! This session was targeted at goal setting, creative networking and overall, increasing recruitment and retention. This weekend proved to be a fantastic opportunity for these young collegians.
.

I not only had a lot of fun during this intense weekend but I also made friends with the photographers who were capturing the sessions! They are a local photography team, called Captured Art Photography. Their work is impressive and they were loads of fun to chat with as well! Check out their photo of the week and website for more information - they would be a fantastic choice for wedding, engagement, boudiour, modeling, senior or family portraits! They were sweet enough to take this neat headshot for me! I love it and wanted to share with you all!

Daily Inspiration: Inspiration is Everywhere

We just returned from a recent trip to Los Cabos, Mexico. Each year we are blessed to visit this lovely place a couple of times as part of my husbands travel for business. He works closely with a fantastic Phi Psi Alum who lives in Cabo San Lucas and an organization called the ALA - American Leadership Academy.

On most of our trips I end up spending the majority of my time with the ladies who are also a part of the trips and each and every year we visit a unique store, called Artesano's.

.
This year I took Ben along for the ride and we poked around this gigantic bit of inspiration for nearly an hour, stumbling upon neat items around every corner.

.
The photos speak for the vast array of material in this unique locale. . . check it out and see for yourself!

Artesano's is located in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It's a bit off the beaten path, but highly visible from the highway into town! Just look for the purple logo on the side of the building, you can't miss it!

I found this great metal piece of art - a cowboy and a horse - outside of Artesano's near all of the amazing pots, wooden outdoor furniture and outdoor art pieces. The cowboy a horse a whopping 1500 pesos, that's under $15o dollars. . . can't you just picture him in your backyard?

One of the reasons I love Artesano's. . . you can find anything you find in any other store in Cabo or San Jose del Cabo at Artesano's for nearly 1/2 the price! Check out these flowers! Love them!

The main reason I wanted to venture over to Artesano's on this trip was to take a look at these neat Moravian stars, they have thousands of different ones, all under $75 US dollars! Can't you just picture one, or maybe three, hanging from my porch around Christmas time? I can. I will soon too!

. This store helps you dream of a day when you'll own your own Mexican villa and when you can choose your tile for throughout your vacation home! An entire wall of Mexican tiles - I. die. Each tile at less than 3 cents a piece. Incredible.

Check out this amazing assortment of large glass decorative balls. I just love the way they are strewn about. . .what an amazing shot . . . if only I were a real photographer!

More of the incredible lanterns. . . these were only 250 pesos, yes kiddos, that's less than $20 a piece! Can you even breathe? I couldn't.

Check out this wall of sinks - they had hundreds of various designed sinks. I love and want them all for my dream home on the Mexican shoreline. I can dream, right?

Check out this huge assortment of all of the Mexican dishes you could ever want! They are lovely, if only I wasn't already at my 50 pound limit in my luggage. . . Next time, right?

Can you see why I'm obsessed with this store. . . this was only a sampling. Artesano's is four floors, with a huge assortment on each level as well as on all four sides of the outdoor portion as well. Make sure to stop by if you take a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - it is a truly a must do.

Daily Inspiration: Leaving on a Jet Plane. . .

Today I am writing from the air. No, really, I'm writing my blog post, live on the internet, in the air!

I'm flying American today and they offered WiFi on my flight to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. This is both a pro and a con in my opinion. I find myself first checking my email for work, working a few work reports and now I'm checking out facebook and updating my blog post for the day! The idea of always being accessible does scare me, but at the same time I had to jump at the chance. I guess a ton of airlines are now offering this opportunity on specific flights - check them out below!

How do you feel about this new experience or new opportunity? Makes you wonder how long it will be until its normal to have WiFi on every flight and when it will be free of charge on every airline? Someday I'm sure we'll look back and 'remember the old days when we didn't have internet access on a plane' - hahahaha!
.

I'm enroute to Mexico for a short trip though Sunday! My hubby will be attending a conference of Foundation Directors - I'm hoping to lay on the beach, get a massage, dine on delicious food and enjoy a few of my favorite mango margaritas with the good company of some of the attendees wives!
.

Daily Inspiration: These Boots are Made for Walking. . .

This weekend I spent a few days with one of my favorite groups of girlfriends, in Austin, Texas! We actually stayed outside of town at my girlfriends mothers home. Our trips are always the perfect combination of catching up, relaxing, getting cute and dancing, eating delicious food, lots of wine and making plenty of memories! This trip was no different and it was just what the doctor ordered for each of us. . .

Each year we gather in another new town, generally at a town where one of us resides or where we can at least host. In true fashion, Carolyn, this years host, was fabulous! She had every detail planned from pick up times at the airport, to a comedy show at downtown's famed nightspot Esther's Follies, to some fantastic vintage shopping on quaint and eclectic South Congress Street.

During our visit one we ventured into a truly Texas store, called Allen's Boots. This store had just about every pair of fantastic cowboy boots that you could imagine. One of the gals (Jessica from underagreenroof) was on a mission to find some monogrammed boots, she saw a few pairs at the Alabama vs. Texas game this year! Although she didn't end up with a pair in her suitcase for the plane ride home, she certainly has her eyes set on a few choice pairs that she'll be searching high and low for online!

Happy Friday, Friends!

Today I am jetsetting on my annual girls trip with a bunch of my favorite ladies! Every year of MLK weekend we get together in a different city to reminisce and catch up on how are lives are changed, evolved and continue to grow!

We served as consultants for our fabulous sorority together a number of years ago! This year we will miss one of our favorites, Carrie, as she is stuck working in San Fran this weekend! Big BUMMER!!

.
Needless to say, this picture is a blast from the past and I'm sure after this weekend I'll come back to reality refreshed, revitalized and with a sore stomach - from laughing so hard!

Who doesn't love a good game of Bingo? Really.

.In our family it is a tradition to play Bingo on Christmas day! We have a fairly large family - probably close to 40 of us on a good year when everyone can make it back to Michigan for the holiday. We open gifts, then we eat our delicious Christmas meal and then we all get comfortable and play bingo for crazy prizes!
.
We all contribute to these prizes and each year there are few traditional gag gifts wrapped somewhere in the mix. Its notorious that there will always be a picture of Uncle Al wrapped somewhere in the mix of prizes and if you're the lucky winner you grin with pride! Most of the Grandkids (myself included) tries to pick which of the paper is going to be Grandma Barnes' paper, because her prizes are always good and you want to win hers! There are lottery tickets, gag gifts and useful items amidst the 100 or so prizes!
.
Each person in our family can win up to 3 times, unless you are one of the little kiddos, then we sort of let you keep winning for the fun of it! Every year some schmuck (I can say this because this year I believe my husband, cousin - Austin, and my sweet sissys beau) wins all three times right away and there is always one or two of my uncles or cousins that rarely wins once! It's hilarious and something we all look forward to every year!

This week I completely missed the boat on some fantastic 'Tibi' sales- and I'm bummed because I'm prepping for our busy warm weather travel season and these dresses would have been the perfect compliment for these trips!

Crabby Cakes by Ben. . .

On Sunday my sweet hubby decided to make dinner for us . . . Ben loves to use whatever we have in our house to make meals! He looked in the refrigerator and in the pantry. Ben loves to cook, so this was not a rare occasion, of course, but yesterday he made crab cakes from scratch, and let me tell you. . . they were Fantastic!

Item one from pantry - canned 'premium' crab meat! Purchased originally for a recent cocktail party, to make miniature crab cakes. Perfect.

.
Mayo, Garlic Powder, Cayenne Pepper, Old Bay Seasoning and Ground Mustard. . .hmm.
.

What does that make?

Hmm. Delicious crabcakes, made by hand, from your lovely husband!
.
Priceless.
.

Pair that with some steamed corn and a great spinach salad! Call it dinner! Yumm.

Ben's Crabby Cakes:
Ingredients:
-2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
-1/4 Onion - Chopped
-3/8 Olive Oil
-1 Egg
-1 6 oz. Can of CrabMeat
-1 Tablespoon of Light Mayonnaise
-1 teaspoon of Dry Mustard
-8 Ounces of Crushed Crackers
-1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
-1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
-1/4 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
-1 teaspoon Chesapeake Bay Seasoning (if desired)
-Salt to Taste
- Ground Black Pepper to Taste
-1 Cup Dried Breadcrumbs
.
Directions:

Saute onions in 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil until they appear clear. Mix egg, crabmeat, light mayonnaise, dry mustard, crushed crackers, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, old bay seasoning, Chesapeake bay seasoning, dash of salt, dash of pepper in one bowl. When onions cool mix with ingredients in large bowl. Shape into 1/2 inch thick patties, coat the patties with breadcrumbs. Heat skillet with 1/2 cup of olive oil on medium high heat. Cook cakes until golden brown. Place on plate with papertowl, to absorb some of the excess oil.

Serve hot and immediately.

Need a dipping sauce? Try this delightful dip to go with your crabby cakes!

Homemade Parmesan and Lemon Dipping Sauce:
Ingredients:

-3/4 cup Sour Cream

-4 Tablespoons Parmesan Cheese

-1 teaspoon Lemon Juice

-dash of Chesapeake Bay Seasoning

- dash of Rubbed Sage

Directions:

Mix them all together in a small bowl and serve on the side with crabby cakes. Delicious!

Ben served this with a great spinach salad with grape tomatoes, dried fruit and pecan pieces. Corn was a great compliment as our crabby cakes were a bit spicy, so it helped to offset the spice a bit!

Favorite Recipes: Jerry's HodgePodge Soup

When we were little my sweet sissy and I used to love go to this little local restaurant with our grandparents. It was called Jerry's Country Inn and it was just that. A little country restaurant that made THE. BEST. SOUP. - handsdown - BEST. SOUP. IN. ALL. OF. MICHIGAN. (nothing like exaggerating - but isn't that how we remember things when were little! ha!)

They had this delicious creation they called 'HodgePodge Soup' - it was supposed to be all sorts of things thrown in a pot. The idea was for you to clean out your pantry and mix it all together. Sounds great -doesn't it? OK not really. But, good news, it was GREAT!
.
A few years back Jerry's Country Inn closed its doors, but my wonderful Mom tracked down this recipe, because it was simply that good!
.
It's a favorite soup to make on a day where you don't have much time, or better yet on a day when you are snowed in! It freezes well and it's downright, good!
.
I made a batch of it yesterday and we are going to eat it this weekend. . .Enjoy!
.

HodgePodge Soup Recipe:

Ingredients:

-5-6 cans of Progresso Minestrone Soup (I use the lowfat and low sodium kind)

-2 cans of Corn

-2 cans of Chili Beans

-2 cans of Spaghetti O's with Meatballs (or 1 large can - I know not the best for you - but trust me its worth it!)

-2 cans of Green Beans (low sodium is what I use)

-1 Large Can of Pork & Beans

-3-5 lbs of Ground Beef (I use Ground Turkey)

Directions:

Cook and drain the ground meat. Poor all canned ingredients into large pot, mix in cooked ground meat. Heat through and serve.

It's literally that easy. . .

Serve with a great spinach salad and maybe even some homemade bread! Dinner is served.

I recently stumbled upon a great jewelry designer and I had to share with you all!

I stumbled on her work a month or so ago as my salon, A Do Hair Design, in Indianapolis, has a display of her beautiful pieces.

After researching her work a bit more, I found myself appreciating her style, as well as her story. Diana Warner Carroll is a New York jewelry designer who finds influence in her life story. Growing up she was influenced by two separate worlds - one world full of brothers, their sports, and the outdoors and one world of dance classes, glitter and glamour. She is inspired by the juxtaposition between the two and finds much of her motivation through family, her love of art, and travel.

Diana gives much of her time and talents to the fight against AIDS, it is one that she became even more passionate about after visiting Africa and recognizing the extreme poverty and devastation that disease has left throughout much of the country. She designates much of her time and efforts towards this fight.

A Decorated Home is a Happy Home. . .

I thoroughly enjoyed having our home decorated for the holidays! It was a special treat, because this year both sets of our parents were able to visit during the holiday season and share in our decorations!

I truly believe that a Decorated Home is a Happy Home. . .I saw this quote somewhere, I can't quite remember where, but I believe it to be true.

Therefore, since our home is still a constant work in progress, it felt nice to have a 'fully decorated home' for a few weeks!

This is our 'real' or live Christmas tree in the front living room! We picked this one up in Ohio, on the way back to Indy from Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving! Our whole house smelled like pine - it was lovely. . .

We had live wreaths on our french doors leading from the living room to the dining room. . .notice the live mistletoe too. . . Ben found this while I was away on business. . . I was so excited, because it is Christmas without mistletoe!

Again, here are some of our decorations that I simply couldn't part with from our 1st Annual Holiday Cocktail Party! This year we asked everyone to bring a canned food item, in the end we donated over 10 boxes of food to a local food pantry in our neighborhood! Thank you everyone!

A few weeks ago we did a giveaway for Melissa Bryant and her fantastic prints!

After a few weeks away over the holidays I thought it would be a nice way to kickstart our 2010 and share the winner of the giveaway! Melissa selected the winner and she was inspired by what the winner submitted. We had over 30 entries via email and a few on the blog - so this was a tough decision for us!

This person who won the print, deserves a fresh start in 2010! Today she officially moved from Florida to Indianapolis and we are so excited to have her back in the midwest! She is planning her wedding, which will take place in April 2010! This will be the perfect compliment to your sewing room . . . I can just picture it now. . .

New Year. . .New You. . .Kicking off 2010!

How was your weekend?

This picture epitomizes my weekend - I love the balloons, they signify fun, yet everything else screams relaxation! Love. It.

If I ruled the world (which won't happen anytime soon, I'm sure!) I'd vote that we always have New Years Eve on a Thursday!

Just think about it. . .you have a short work week leading up to the big celebration. You then can party like a 'rockstar' on Thursday evening and then you still have a long weekend to recuperate, undecorate your house and organize your life for the new year!

My hubby and I did just that this weekend. . .we spent our NYE with good friends at a local hotspot called 'SI - or Scholars Inn' . . .we had a delightful dinner, delicious cocktails and we danced away all of our calories when we hit another local spot, called '45 Degrees'!

We took our time getting up on New Years Day, shopped a bit, began dedecorating and dined on homemade pork, sauerkraut and apples for dinner with my sweet sis and her beau and wrapped up our day by watching a dvd at home!

On Saturday and Sunday we found ourselves dedecorating and cleaning our house from top to bottom! It was a refreshing way to start the New Year! I think we kicked off 2010 in perfect fashion and I'm eager to see where our new found goals, ideas and opportunities will take us!

Daily Inspiration: Merry 'belated' Christmas!

How are you all? Are you holding up ok? Did you have a fantastic holiday and now you're gearing up for a great start to the new year?

I sure am. . . I've been fending off a terrible little cold for almost 2.5 months now. . . today my doctor finally wrote me another prescription (this is the 3rd one!)to hopefully get over it this time around!

Needless to say, more to come shortly. . . hope you had a Merry Christmas, that you enjoy your low-key week, and that you kick off New Years with a bang!
